Council Takes Action on City Attorney

On December 3rd, 2018 the City Council and I took decisive action by firing Alvarez-Glasman & Colvin, the firm that has represented the City as our attorney for the last 29 years.

As pledged during my campaign in 2016, I initiated long-overdue performance evaluations of all positions that report directly to the Mayor and City Council shortly after I was elected. This included the City Manager, City Clerk, and City Attorney. As part of that evaluation process, I proposed that we initiate a Request for Proposal (RFP) process for City Attorney services back in February. I noted that this process had never been conducted since the retention of the Alvarez-Glasman & Colvin Law Firm in 1989, and that it was important that the City request proposals to ensure we are maximizing our legal representation and minimizing our costs. Unfortunately, the City Council at that time did not support this action.

Since that time, our performance evaluation process has been completed and the new council and I unanimously concurred that the timing was right to dismiss Alvarez-Glasman & Colvin Law Firm, effective immediately. We have selected the firm of Best, Best & Krieger, with Christi Hogin serving as Lead Attorney, to provide interim legal counsel as we pursue the process of selecting a new city attorney. I will keep you posted on our progress in the coming weeks.
